A First Travelogue
The 10th Year Wedding Anniversary
Little Rock, Arkansas

August 3rd, 4th, and 5th of 2007

The State Capital
state cap

A film, "Under Siege" has a group of suicide bombers attacking the US Capitol. Wait a second, is that really the US Capitol?
Nope, it's the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock. It has been used as the US Capitol's "body double" in a few films.

peace

Okay, okay, you caught me....the sky wasn't THAT blue, but closer to the top photo. I was trying to bring
out the letters in the round windows. Can you read them?
P-E-A-C-E

door

These doors cost $10, 000 when purchased from Tiffany's around 1910, and there are four sets.
Just don't try to go into them. *sigh* which we figured out after trying all four sets...like idiots.
cupola

This is the view from inside and your first warning...
I got really carried away with taking pictures in here. The place was practically deserted,
it was cool inside and sweltering outside, I had been unable to take pictures at the place we visited right before this,
and my camera finger was itching. Another reason there are no pictures of the
Arkansas Historic Musuem: our tour guide slipped and twisted her ankle! We only saw two of the five buildings.
Anyway, I figure when Brides are having their photos taken at the Capital, then I can too!
(and yes, I asked her permission!)

stairs

One reason it was chilly, all the marble! Imported from 3 states.
And yes, it makes for really cool echoes. Or annoying, if you wear clippety cloppety shoes...
ceiling

Why don't people create beautiful ceilings anymore?

light

Or at least pay attention, real attention, to light fixtures?

houseview

See the House? Why is it called that? The House of Representatives?
They don't live there, do they? Shouldn't it be a Gaggle of Representatives?

senate

The Senate entrance is equally impressive and the light hitting the marble
at this time of day brings out the veins...
but really, the most strking thing about the Senate we couldn't really
see very well because they have the entrance blocked. But I did
manage to squeeze my camera in and take a quick picture.

senate ceiling

Although we couldn't go into the Senate, we were able to go here:

gov room

See the man above the fireplace? Our last govenor Mike Huckabee, another Arkansan running for
President! I hope it's not in the water! The thought of one of my kids chosing politics makes me cringe!

fireplace

In case you were distracted by the manliness of Huckabee,
here's a close up of the fireplace.
It's amazing the craftmanship in all the details!
cornice

Details are EVERyWhere!
This elaborate column,
tucked into a corner...
ceiling

Not only was the ceiling awesome,
but the silver chandelier was polished and clean!
So unlike my house...
supreme court

It was nice to sit and look at the light coming in
through the tall windows, so quiet.
