Valentine’s Day
by GinafishValentine’s Day. Who was Saint Valentine? Well, that’s a good question. He wasn’t a patron saint of lovers, and he wasn’t only one person. He was probably three. There is a really delicious and confusing page about Saint Valentine at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine
So what is Valentine’s Day? A day to profess your adoring love to your partner with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh? Opps! Wrong holiday, I meant to say gold, dinner, and flowers. What started off as simple an exchange of cards has been twisted and commercialized into the one night of the year to be the most romantic and you’d better get it right! Thank you very much Western Capitalist Society.
Yes, I play along a little. I purchase valentines for the kids to exchange in class. I buy cookies for the class party. I even bought myself something from my hubby this year. So I contributed to the rise of the economy because I have people in my life I love. Because after all, that’s what it’s all about, right?
Personally, I can’t wait for chocolate to go on sale. And I’d like to use it as an excuse to eat dinner with my husband alone. At least the aftermath of Valentine’s Day isn’t so bad. Luckily there is no Valentine’s tree to take down. All though, this year, I came very close.
So what’s your take? Valentine’s day great? Too commercial? Icky all around? Good in small doses? Can’t wait for the perfect day? What do you think?
