Roller Skating, Part I
by GinafishSo…we took the family roller skating on Janury 3rd.
We had promised Suzanne that for her birthday we would take her and if she enjoyed it, we would buy her roller skates.
We ended up going to Joyland in Cabot and luck us, on Saturday parents are free if they are skating with kids. So our total cost was only $12! And YES! They had skates small enough for both kids! They also were very friendly and adjusted the skates a couple of times. Suzanne did better when hers were locked, and Ethan did better when his were loose.
And yes, my skates and hubby’s skates fit too!
As we were putting on everyone’s skates, Suzanne exclaimed excitedly “It’s Natalie!” We never see anyone we know when out and about, but Suzanne had a classmate skating at the same time with her Nana and Grandpa. Suzanne was very excited to get out and see Natalie on the skating rink.
Now…naturally, most skating rinks are old and this one was no exception. How often do you see “New Skating Rink!” or “New Bowling Alley!” Or even “Recently Remodeled!”. Probably never. So this one had black carpet with bright 80s stars that glowed and were even brighter in the dark. Of course, it had a disco ball and lights that flashed. They also periodically played games and we were there for Limbo! Which Suzanne was brave enough to try! Of course, she skated forward and bent over frontwards instead of backwards, but all little kids did the same.
We all had a great time! I apologize for the photo quality. I didn’t take a real camera and I didn’t adjust my cellphone to the highest setting. So fuzzy camera phone photos are watcha get.
So we skated for about an hour and Suzanne mentioned that she really wanted to skate in the dark with the disco ball lit up. I said it never hurts to ask, so we asked the front desk if that was possible. I hinted that my family wouldn’t be able to go until that happened so I’d REALLY appreciate it! LoL, they were happy to do it and said they did it throughout the day anyway.
Josh and I have taken turns holding the kids hands, and sometimes they wanted to skate solo. They would slip to the ground once in a while but we prepared by having them practice with their bike safety stuff on until they got steady on their feet. There were a few other parents skating, and Josh and I weren’t the only ones who hadn’t skated in many years.
But Josh and I were doing AWESOME! I fell once on my good knee, not to shabby!
And then Josh fell. Chaos. He had been standing watching his family skate and lost his balance. He fell over to his left side and heard snap, crackle, pop.
A moment later, an employee was rushing over to me saying that my husband needed me quickly. I got over to him, and as it turned out, the Nana of Natalie was a CNA (certified nurses aid) so with her help, Josh’s skate was taken off, a cardboard splint was put on and off we were to the ER.
Lucky for us, Josh’s parents live close enough that his mom was at the hospital within 3 minutes of us arriving. So part 2 of the roller skating story shall be called “Ankle”. ![]()

I have been back at work and not checking blogs regularly…you guys have had a LOT going on! I am going to make my husband read your entry on how tiring it is to work a full week when you are not used to it. Going back to work after a 5 week break has left me exhausted
Congrats on the job. It may not be exactly what you want but it may be more fullfilling that you expect. I hope Josh has a speedy recovery!
