Winter for a day
by GinafishThis last weekend we had really warm weather with blustery breezes. I asked a lady if Spring was finally here and she mused that she hoped so since her flowers were starting to bloom. But this year the winter weather has been wacky and unpredictable.
In the morning, our routine goes a little bit like this. Hubby gets up and gets in the shower, shaves, and calls out to me “What’s the weather like today?” so he’ll know if it’s a sweater day or a short sleeve day. Meanwhile, I’m getting breakfast on the table for E, prepping his toothbrush so I don’t find half a tube of minty Crest on the counter, and then turning on the morning news to wait for the weather in anticipation of hubby’s question, and so I’ll know how much or little to bundle up E for school.
Yesterday, I turned on the weather, and for some odd reason there were school closings scrolling across the bottom. What in the world? I thought. I went to the bedroom window and sure enough, white snow was all over everything. Just the day before it had been 60 degrees and raining so fast our road was flooding!
So I’m watching the list of schools scroll by and don’t see my son’s school listed. I poke my head out the bedroom and holler at my son that he needs to brush his teeth NOW! Then I close the door and turn to hubby.
“There’s snow outside,” I said.
“No WAY!” he gently said.
“So what are we going to do? Ethan will be totally crushed if we make him go to school while he knows Suzanne is staying home and will get to play in it.” I started to get my dog eyes out.
“Well, just don’t say anything to him, and then rush him out to the bus when it gets here.”
I try stronger puppy dog eyes. “It’s not fair, they’ve both begged and pleaded for snow all winter, and I can’t bring myself to send him to school. I don’t care. That other kid, JT, got to miss a whole week of school because his parents took him to Disney land! This is one day!”
Puppy dog eyes worked. He ascended. “Okay, do you want to tell him or do you want us both too?”
So we head out and Josh asks Ethan to leave the bathroom and open the front door. He does and sees immediately that snow is everywhere! We tell him he is staying home and he leaps 3 feet into the air and we get huge hugs.
15 minutes later, the news adds his school to the list scrolling the bottom. But that’s alright because he has already been excited for fifteen minutes.
By 7:30 a.m. we were outside. Back in by 8 a.m. After warming up with warm chocolate milk and a couple of cartoons, we were back outside at 11 a.m. until 12 a.m. And then it all melted by the evening. Well… not all of it, the pile of snow that was about 2 feet tall that Ethan called a snowman is now about 4 inches tall. But it will be melted soon. At least we have a couple of snowballs in the freezer for next summer to toss around.

Some how I squished this and can’t fix it!

It’s so cute to hear stories of snow days for people that don’t get snow all the time. We are so used to it here in Calgary - but Josh (our 4 year old) is just as excited as a kid in Florida every time it snows
Im glad you guys had fun in the Snow. I thought it was just a big mess. I let Joycelyn make snowballs off of the car. Then I put her on top to make a snow angel. Maybe 30 mins. of fun. THen another 40 to make her get in the car. So I love the purle coat Suzanne has on. Ive got one in my car now if I can ever bring it in to give to Aunt Leslie. lol.
I dont know if you knew our last name before. It was Wheeler. I changed out name back to my maiden name. Its weird but it works.
We had fun on Tuesday…we hardly had enough to play in on Friday. Now that we have had the snow days…I am ready for spring!! I am much happier in warmer weather
