50th Anniversary

There is something that Arkansas is well known for in other states besides Bill Clinton. A national disgrace called the Central High Crisis. Today a visitors center detailing the history of this event is being opened, and a week-wide celebration is taking place in Little Rock.

Let’s get this right. A National DisGRacE! Being CELEbrated!

To quote from Michael Klarman’s blog: http://isaraurl.com/xsE1E

It was southern white violence against peaceful black civil rights demonstrators that changed national opinion on race. Violent confrontations over school desegregation tended to reveal blacks at their best and whites at their worst.

Yes, important strides in race took place. While white Southerners behaved atrociously. And they use words like “celebration”?? Yes, let’s celebrate that racism was so awful that white people spit on people because of the color of their skin.

I am so repulsed by racism and bigots and any group of people that think they are better and should have more rights than others. God created man, woman, white, black, yellow all in his image!

I hate that I live in a place where there is a chance you will be talking to a member of the KKK and not even know it. That I once had black friends who wouldn’t drive through a certain city only 7 miles from my house.

I think it’s vital to recognize racism still exists and to promote justice and equality. I think it’s also important to say “We are ashamed of this part of our history and want to move past it. We are so grateful that most bigots are now USUALLY the silent minority, not the loud majority, and we should do everything we can to erase prejudice and teach love for all mankind.”

On another issue, in regards to Jena, Louisiana. I’m sorry for this tragic story to happen. The events that started in August 2006 and have lead up to the protests of today. I am sorry for the years and years of history before that also. I hope in 2057, we aren’t celebrating the anniversary of it in the newspaper.
