Dinner Time
by GinafishI do not like to cook. I do not like to improvise in the kitchen. I’m not a throw it together and taste it kind of cook. I can’t watch Food TV, take inspiration and create masterpieces for family meals. Give me a recipe, with explicit instructions, and I’ll follow it to the tee.
Unfortunately, cooking all week doesn’t lend itself well to a list of recipes. Things happen, sometimes you are crunched for time so you opt for the quick restaurant food, or the corn dogs and fries you pop in the oven and forget about till the timer goes off (if you hear it).
And then there are days like today. I know I have a lot of chicken in the freezer. I know my kids will probably not like anything I do with it other than saute it with salt and pepper. I know I have four limes in the frig that need to be used. I tried to find a recipe to follow. But there are too. many. recipes. online.
The other day I was shopping at the grocery store by myself and hunted for a particular cereal on the cereal aisle. I went up and down 3 times b/c I was sure I had bought this cereal there before. I kept passing this forlorn man standing in the same spot.
“I’m having trouble finding Captain Crunch,” I said, “Have you seen it?”
“No,” he whimpered.
“Okay, well, you seem to be having a hard time finding your cereal too, which one are you looking for?” I inquired.
“Well, that’s just it…I don’t know what I want and there are too many kinds to chose from.”
Brother, I feel your pain.
I have to cook chicken tonight. There are not enough choices for my hubby and me, and limited ones for my kids. Trying to do it all with the same bird doesn’t work. Honey bee, I think I’ll be doing the chicken on the stove with salt and pepper, okay? Maybe we can squeeze some lime juice on it and pretend it’s fancy? Let’s pretend it’s a curry? mmmmm….
