Alzhiemers or absent minded?
by GinafishMy great grandma had alzhiemers. Her son, my grandpa, had parkinsons’ and dementia. I think I’m going nuts sometimes. Other people say they do the same things, but I’m not sure. Can’t get into their head to find out either. Darn it.
This weekend, I went with my daughter to the grocery store. While we were there, I ran into a woman I use to go to church with. We visited for a minute, I finished shopping and we went outside to get in the van. But we couldn’t….I locked the keys inside. I dug and dug in my purse, pulled everything out. No keys. But yes, I have a cell phone, and yes, my husband could come get us right away.
You remember the woman I bumped into? A few months ago, in the winter, I ran into her at the same store. I went outside, and I had locked my keys in the van. I’m beginning to think anytime I run into her, my keys will be locked in somewhere.
So Suzanne and I push the cart back up to the front of the store, and hide behind a big display of plants. We buy a lemonade and share it, while Suzanne talks about how Lovvveelly the flowers are. The woman I know leaves and doesn’t see us. Whew! That was a close embaressment, huh?
Hubby unlocks van, heroically, we drive our now warm groceries home.
Sunday comes and we go to visit our old church because we are having lunch at my parents house, and it’s a 50 minute drive from our new church. We haven’t seen these friends in a long time, and we didn’t get to visit enough, but I enjoyed their new interim pastor, and the service greatly.
So Monday, I take my son to get his allergy shot. My sister is having her car towed and my mother has agreed to watch Suzanne while E gets his shot. And my mother has to take my sister to work after her car gets towed.
E gets his shot, we wait 20 minutes afterwards since he has started a new serum. Then we go to get in the van where once again, not even 48 hours later, I have locked the keys in the van again. I don’t get mad. I don’t cry. I call my mom. “Can you pick us up? I think I have an extra key at your house.” “Well, your sister just took my car to meet the tow truck so it’ll be a little bit”. It’s okay, I can wait.
So luckily, she did have an extra key, we got in the van, and we drove away.
I bought a magnetic key holder after the winter incident of locking myself out at the store. But I haven’t made another copy of my key yet to put in it.
My aunt is a little like me in that regard. But now she drives a nice Lexus that won’t let her lock the keys inside. I either need one of those or one of the cars that has the keypad panel you type a code into.
In the last 6 years, I have locked myself out of the van many times. Twice with my kids stuck inside, too young to unbuckle their car seats and open the door. Once in winter, in our garage. Once in the rain, outside my parents house.
I’m such a dweeb. Have you ever locked yourself out? Please make me feel better and share your story, k?
