Anchovies
by GinafishMy husband likes to eat anchovies in mustard sauce. *gag* I don’t. They look absolutely disgusting. We were talking about quirks yesterday and I thought maybe his anchovy fondness was a quirk. It’s not. It’s just gross.
So I started to wonder, what’s qualifies as a food quirk, and what’s a regional delicacy? This weekend I made a coca cola cake from a recipe I found on the blog of a former Arkansan. She said it had nuts in it, but didn’t specify so I decided to add peanuts. After all, it’s a well known Arkansas/Southern idea to add peanuts to a bottle of Coke. However, after checking her blog again, her mom used pecans. (In Arkansas pronounced as Peee Cawwwns.)
Arkansas: peanuts in Coke = normal, not a quirk. No one is going to look at you like you just fell on the earth from another planet.
Me. I like to add relish to my pinto beans sometimes. I asked my husband if that’s a quirk. Nope, he says…lots of people do that. Hrmph…. And no, even when pregnant, I never ate pickles and ice cream. I did eat a lot of apples with peanut butter, tomato juice, and blts. A lot. Yeah, every day almost. I get in food ruts, but that’s another topic.
My husband likes to mash his cake and ice cream together and the balance of both has to be just right. Quirk. No one else I know does this.
Last night I watched Anthony Bourdain on the Travel Channel. This guy will eat whatever is put in front of him. If you gave him a plate of Wd-40 with shredded duct tape, and threw some snails on it for garnish, he’d eat it. I don’t EVEN want to know what his food quirk is.
But I do want to know what yours is… If you’ll admit it… ChiCKEN!! Bawk, bawk bawk bawk baWWkkk!
